The National City Railcar Plaza is located in National City, California. The Railcar Plaza is, by definition, a large public art space created together by National City and the Port of San Diego. Built to commemorate the area's very important railroad history, it has become a proud symbol of San Diego's rich past to both citizens and tourists alike. The location for this new Plaza was taken under careful consideration; the site was chosen as the first in a series of new construction projects to bring attention and new development to the industrial portion of National City.
Designed by area architects, the structure was built to house a historic, 113-year old passenger coach, that was reclaimed and restored thanks to a devout group of citizens through the city's public art program. The passenger coach was originally built in 1887 for The National City & Otay Railway, and was retired a short time later in 1914. It was a mystery for over 60 years as to what became of the car, until it was found to be used as part of a private residence. The car is open on one side, just as it was when it was in service, and features running boards across the entire thirty-two foot length. Inside the 58-passenger car has redwood sides and a sugar pine ceiling, along with two oil-burning lamps. During its short service, it was hauled by a steam-engine locomotive between San Diego and National City.
The building it is housed in is built to resemble that of a square lantern, and is built in the style of early California-American railroad architecture. It is surrounded by a grassy lawn and public plaza, plus a short track that allows the passenger coach to be pulled outside during special occasions. Inside, four display rooms showcase rotating exhibits featuring not only railroad history, but early San Diego and California history. Today, The National City Railcar Plaza as well as the adjacent Old Depot, allow visitors to relive the days when the steam train was the main mode of transportation in Southern California.
