The Old Globe Theatre, located in San Diego, California, has a short, but nonetheless interesting, history. Commonly referred to just as “The Old Globe,” this theatre broke ground on April 28, 1935, and was designed to be a temporary structure, an exhibit as part of The California Pacific International Exposition at Balboa Park. It took only thirty-two days to build, at a cost of only $20,000. Interestingly enough, this building was to be a copy of a copy: San Diego's Old Globe was meant to be little more than a copy of the one built two year's prior for Chicago's Century of Progress World Fair. The Chicago Globe was a copy of the original Globe Theatre, partially built by William Shakesphere, in London, England. Like the original Globe in London, the San Diego version provided an open pit and stage, with covered seating for the audience members.

During it's existence as apart of the California Exposition, it held short, 50-minute versions of Shakesphere's most famous plays, on a continual basis. The original plans had called for the demolition of the theatre after the end of the Exposition, but local residents had grown so fond of the building that a committee was formed for the purchase and continued use of the building. In 1937, San Diego Community Theatre, a local non-profit group, obtained a grant from the government to purchase the building and the land it sits on in Balboa Park. The structure was then closed for a short period of time while the temporary structure was made a permanent structure by bringing it up to modern building codes. The first production to be staged at the new, permanent-Old Globe was John Van Druten's “The Distraff Side.”

This early life of the Old Globe, however, was short lived. On December 8, 1941, the U.S. Military commandeered use of the entire Balboa Park area to assist in it's efforts against Japan in World War II. The Old Globe was given a 24-hour notice to evacuate. For the next five years, San Diego Community Theatre held performances at other venues around town. On October 29th, 1947, the Old Globe re-opened with a staging of the play, “The Time of Your Life.” Two years later, in 1949, the theatre company partnered with nearby San Diego State University to launch the annual San Diego National Shakesphere Festival. Community involvement then launched from that point, with various community institutions, including The La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, partnering with the Old Globe to produce plays.

The Old Globe Theatre Complex was soon given a second theatre adjacent to Old Globe, known as the Cassius Carter Center Stage, a 225-seat open-air theatre. Little changed over the next ten years at Old Globe, until March 8, 1978, when an arsonist set fire to Old Globe, completely destroying the 43-year old building. A little over a month later, the theatre company began a city-wide fundraiser for the rebuilding of the structure. In the meantime, a third stage was being constructed, a 620-seat Festival Theatre. In 1979, the entire complex (all three stages) was given the new name of The Simon Edison Centre for the Performing Arts, named after the largest financial contributor to the rebuilding of Old Globe. On January 5, 1982, re-dedication ceremonies were conducted for the opening of the new Old Globe Theatre. Today, Old Globe and its other two stages are open on a regular basis for world-class performances, and still host the annual Shakesphere Festival.
